Nick Geipel | Layers – an inclusive alternative to defensive design

Nick Geipel, Bachelorarbeit 2024

Defensive design is common practice in cities globally. To deter selected groups of people from being in public space the general public has to suffer under antihuman design. Layers is a bench system that takes human-centered city planning concepts into consideration and creates an inclusive social space. Layers‘ modular base system made from leftover industrial concrete creates different heights, opening the use context. People are free to sit, perch, lounge, work on the two layered wood beam top. Layers is not only made from sustainable materials, repairable and deconstructable into its components, it’s also installable by two workers without impacting their health negatively.
